How do I distribute the cost of a work item across the months?

Use «Distribute cost over time» to distribute evenly, proportionally or manually, and keep an eye on the Remaining column.

When you add or edit a work item in Own Production, you distribute the cost in the Distribute cost over time section. The amount is automatically distributed evenly across the period, but you can enter your own amounts per month or use the buttons for even or proportional distribution.

How to do it

  1. Open the work item in Own Production for editing, or create a new one with Add work.

  2. Go to the Distribute cost over time section. You see one column per month in the period and a column called Remaining.

  3. Choose how you want to distribute:

    • Enter amounts manually in each month, for example when staffing varies.

    • Distribute evenly over months gives the same amount each month.

    • Distribute proportionally over months distributes proportionately.

    • Reset returns to the default distribution.

  4. Check that Remaining is 0, so that the full amount has been distributed.

  5. Click Confirm.

Own Production with month columns. 1: the Period field, which determines which months the cost is distributed over. 2: a month column with quantity (QTY) and cost for the month.

Good to know

  • The Remaining column shows how much of the line's amount has not yet been distributed to a month.

  • If plans change along the way, you can redistribute the remaining amount over several months from the overview.

  • In the overview you can choose to show amount or quantity per month, so you see both quantity and cost.

  • The distribution affects when the cost occurs in time, not the size of the final forecast.
