Why do the final forecast and contribution margin (%) fluctuate from week to week?

The fluctuations are usually caused by invoices that are not linked or are linked to the wrong place, unresolved change orders, or Setup and Operation that has not been corrected after a closed month.

The final forecast almost always fluctuates because costs come in or are moved without the forecast being adjusted. The most common causes are invoices linked to the wrong place, new invoices that are not linked, change orders that change status, and Setup and Operation that has not been corrected.

Common causes and what to do

  • Invoice linked to the wrong production code: Posted goes over the final forecast on one code and under on another. Change the link on the invoice.

  • New invoices without a link: The invoices are in the accounting system but not connected to a purchase, change order or Setup and Operation. Link them in Invoice.

  • Change Order Subcontractor that changes status: A change order that is approved, or that gets a new cost, moves the final forecast. That is correct, but check that the cost is not also included as an expected addition or uncertainty.

  • Setup and Operation: When you close a month, the accrued amount is replaced by the posted amount. If an invoice is posted to the wrong expense item, it hits the forecast directly.

  • The estimate has been republished: A new revision of the estimate changes the budget and thereby the final forecast on codes without purchases.
