How do I separate production code number and name that are in the same cell in Excel?

Add two new columns in Excel and use formulas: one that extracts the number and one that extracts the name. Copy the formulas down the entire column.

Add two new columns in Excel and use formulas: one that extracts the number and one that extracts the name. It works best when the cell is built as "number space text", for example "401 Groundwork".

How to do it

  1. Insert two new columns next to the column with number and name.

  2. In the first, enter a formula that extracts the text before the first space, for example =LEFT(A2,FIND(" ",A2)-1).

  3. In the second, enter a formula that extracts the text after the first space, for example =MID(A2,FIND(" ",A2)+1,200).

  4. Make sure A2 points to the cell with the combined text.

  5. Copy the formulas down the entire column.

  6. Use the new columns as number and name when you import via the three dots next to the project name → Import data.

The Import data dialog for estimate lines. 1 points to the field Drag and drop documents or images here or click to add, where the Excel file is uploaded.

Good to know

  • If the cells are structured differently, for example with a hyphen or several spaces, you may need to clean up manually.

  • If you use Norwegian Excel, the functions are called VENSTRE, FINN and DELTEKST, and the separator is a semicolon.
